Lutz Lehmann // Senior SAM Engagement Manager, Microsoft Deutschland GmbH
"Against the background of increasingly complex IT systems in industry as well as in authorities and public institutions, those responsible face major challenges when it comes to maintaining information security and complying with legal requirements. They must ensure that the information technology used is always in a legally compliant state. Microsoft therefore welcomes the successful introduction of modern and sustainable Software Asset Management processes at the Hamburg Port Authority with the support of Microsoft SAM partner, Softline. The administration and administrative effort for correct license management in more complex organisational structures is often underestimated. Counting computers or checking licenses is increasingly being replaced by future-oriented licensing options and cloud services, which not only save time, but also guarantee a high degree of administrative and legal security and are at the same time more cost effective. Microsoft SAM partners such as Softline support companies and authorities with their specialist knowledge and their range of high-performance SAM services both in the individual creation and maintenance of IT compliance and in the transformation of IT into mobile-first / cloud-first World."
The future-oriented port management of the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA] is deployed wherever efficiency, security and profitability are concerned in the Port of Hamburg. These factors were taken into account when establishing a software license management programme within the HPA. Our customer‘s goal was to realign processes and to create an awareness of the connections between the IT infrastructure and the optimisation of software licenses within the company.
More transparency and efficiency
The HPA was looking for a way to gain visibility of the full estate of software and hardware deployments, as well as previous and future license purchases. This will allow HPA to proactively work on future requirements more optimally. Integral to this were the structures pertaining to the process and lifecycle which were to be analysed and optimised. In addition driving more value and intelligence from their existing SAM tool from Snow Software which was to be used more effectively. Our customer decided to have the license management programme implemented and accompanied by comprehensive advice from our ITAM, SAM and licensing specialists. The decisive factor here was Softline‘s vendor independence as well as the trusted cooperation and innovative approach in previous projects.
The extensive SAM project resulted in the successful implementation of a full license health check for Microsoft. The cooperation between HPA, Softline and Microsoft created transparency and compliance for the publisher's products. The implementation of a license management programme also led to an identification of a potential overspend and this enables HPA to achieve cost savings in a six-figure value. The HPA therefore decided to work with Softline on a permanent basis: we provide ongoing support in the day-to-day business of license management, maintaining license purchases in the SAM tool, and in answering licensing questions.
Stefan van Eijden // Manager IT Base infrastructure
"From the first workshop to the ongoing operation of the SAM service, the Softline team impressed with their very high level of competence and excellent specialist knowledge in licensing rights. We were really impressed by the commitment of the project staff to work their way through difficult and ‘historical‘ issues and to process them transparently."
